"The Ground Floor Just Sank": Viral Video Shows Moment AE-FUNAI Student’s Lodge Collapsed in Ebonyi [Video + Exclusive Chat]

In what could have easily ended in tragedy, a student from Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Enugu State, has shared a harrowing experience after the ground floor of her private lodge sank into the soil, leaving several students displaced and their belongings buried, A2B Media reports.

The incident, which occurred in a privately owned 3-storey building with five separate blocks, is now making rounds on TikTok with over 1.5 million views, thanks to a video shared by the survivor, Ojiego Chimamanda Kimberly (TikTok: @Kimchi_). Her calm yet detailed narration has drawn massive attention, sparking conversations around building safety and infrastructure in student areas.

“Nothing prepares you for moments like these,” she wrote in her caption.
“I woke up in the morning and the tiles in my room were swelling, the doors couldn't even open, and we were hearing cracking sounds coming from outside.
Someone from upstairs ran out shouting the building was about to collapse.
We got outside and saw that the pillars were breaking, the walls were cracking, and the tiles had shattered.”

According to Kimberly, the entire ground floor sank about 6 feet deep, completely burying her room and at least three others. She confirmed to A2satsBlog Media that no lives were lost, and everyone managed to evacuate just in time; though most of them had no chance to pick up valuables like phones, laptops, and school documents.

In an exclusive chat with our correspondent, she revealed that:

  • The incident happened at a private lodge not affiliated with the school.

  • The caretaker is currently unreachable, and

  • No word has been received from the landlords since the collapse.

Many speculate that the tragedy may have been caused by a poor foundation, unable to withstand the weight of the multi-storey structure. The viral video (which shows her dancing in a friend’s room the night before the collapse) adds an emotional contrast to the terrifying morning that followed.

This incident once again raises serious questions about the structural integrity of buildings rented to students across Nigeria. In recent years, cases of collapses have been traced back to:

  • Substandard materials

  • Poor architectural planning

  • Overloading of buildings without reinforcement

  • Lack of regulatory supervision

While we are thankful there was no loss of life in this situation, it highlights the urgent need for inspections, compliance with building codes, and accountability from landlords who house hundreds of students in high-risk structures.

We will continue to follow the story and update readers (A2Bers) as more information unfolds.
