‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 13 Spoilers: Jackson, April Rekindle Romance? Jesse Williams’ Speech at BET Awards Praised for Pushing ‘Black Lives Matter’ Movement Forward
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13 may
feature reconciliation between Jackson and April. Jesse Williams, who
portrays Dr. Avery Jackson in the medical drama series, was praised for
pushing the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement forward following his rousing
anti-racism speech at the recent BET Awards in Los Angeles, California.
According to Carter Matt, the incoming season may find Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) putting their relationship back together. The two were married and have divorced. They had a child named Samuel, who died shortly after birth.
During an interview with TVLine, Williams teased the status between Jackson and April. He said, “[It’s] day to day with Jackson and April. They can have a very civil, mature conversation one moment, then be at each other’s throats [the next], because real life is like that. We carry frustrations and baggage and grudges.”
Williams admitted during a previous interview ahead of the season 12 finale that there may be a chance of reconciliation between the two characters. He noted that the birth of their child somehow helped their troubled connection saying, “Their relationship may not have worked, they might have stumbled along the way, but they did accomplish something.”
Meanwhile, the 34-year old actor was praised for his powerful anti-racism speech during the recent Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on June 26. According to Time.com, Williams delivered a political speech about racial injustice while accepting the BET Humanitarian Award. He received the standing ovation after pushing the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement forward by voicing out against police brutality over people of color.
An excerpt from Williams’ speech read posted on The Independent read, “…we’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil… gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit. The thing is though… the thing is that just because we’re magic doesn’t mean we’re not real.”
Williams is also well-known for his involvement in civil rights and advocacy groups.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is an American medical drama that debuted on ABC on March 2005. It is considered one of the highest-rated dramas in the coveted 18-49 demographic. Season 13 is scheduled to premiere on ABC on September 22, 2016.
