Gbese: Fake engineer bags 1,230 years in prison over N28m scam and guilty of 82 counts [Full Gist]

In what appears to be corruption at its peak, a self-proclaimed site engineer and housing agent identified as Babatunde Habeeb, has been sentenced to 1,230 years imprisonment by a Lagos state high court in Igbosere for N28 million scam.

The Nation newspaper reports that the court convicted the accused for defrauding 101 accommodation seekers under the pretext of renting them 13 apartments in a building at Alapere-Ketu, Lagos.

Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye found Habeeb, also known as Babatunde Salaudeen, guilty of 82 counts of conspiring with his elder brother, Alhaji Ishola Salaudeen, and obtaining the N28m under false pretence.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said Alhaji Salaudeen, who owns the property, is on the run.

The commission said the convict committed the offences in 2013.

When delivering the judgment, the court stated that the EFCC proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Meanwhile, the special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on prosecution, Obono-Obla made an official statement at the official launch of DoroCorruption Mobile App and Inauguration of Lawyers Network Against Corruption in Abuja on Thursday, March 14.

He however noted that three years is not enough to fight corruption in the country.
