Barcelona went top of the La Liga standings on the back of a resounding 5-1 win over arch-rivals Real Madrid in the first Clasico of the season. Without Lionel Messi, Barcelona faced no trouble in dispatching Real who looked poor in the first half and were swept aside as they went in search for the equaliser later in the second half.

Luis Suarez bagged a hat-trick with goals on either side of the break as VAR came into use for the first time in Clasico history. Elsewhere, Coutinho and Arturo Vidal also found themselves on the scoresheet.

Marcelo scored his third goal in three games to reduce the deficit to 2-1 at a time but Barcelona didn’t let the game get away from their grasp.

The result would once again raise question marks over the future of Julen Lopetegui at Real Madrid.
