BREAKING: UNIOSUN's Latman Says Osogbo National Students' Union (ONSU) President-elect's ineligible, Petitions electoral committee [Details]
A 400 level student of Osun State University, Muritala Abdullateef (LATMAN) has petitioned the electoral committee that conducted the recent Osogbo National Students Union Election that brought in Adetoro Afeez (Asala) as the president. Latman contested for the post of president and had the second highest votes in the election.
He has however challenged the election that brought in Asala, claiming that Asala was not eligible to contest as president.
Read the petition below:
Osogbo National Students’ Union NHQ,
The Chairman Election Tribunal.
GROSS MISCONDUCT, MISUSE OF POWER BY OSOGBO NATIONAL STUDENTS UNION ELECTORAL COMMITTEE; A LAWFUL DEMAND TO REMOVE ADETORO AFEEZ (ASALA) AS THE NEWLY ELECTED ONSU NATIONAL PRESIDENT.
Sequel to the petition written on the 29th of December 2019 over question surrounding the eligibility of one of the presidential aspirant in the just concluded ONSU national election in person of ADETORO AFEEZ (ASALA). The petition which was later taken to the union legal adviser by the electoral committee themselves and which was later affirmed that the said aspirant (ADETORO AFEEZ ASALA) was not eligible to contest the said election but only have the right to vote.
It was so sardonic that the Electoral Committee led by RAFIU KAZEEM ADENIYI(QZED) turned a deaf ears and a blind eyes to the fact that ADETORO AFEEZ(ASALA) was not eligible to contest even after the intervention by the union Legal Adviser on the 30th of December, 2019 that the said candidate has not yet been matriculated , he has not paid his tuition fee and has not done any registration formality regarding the claimed admission as at the time the petition was submitted, (29th of December 2019), even till the day of the election.
Consequent upon the above, it is imperative for me to petition this daylight affront on our consciousness as a student union of the town and it will amount to beginning of fraudulent means to ascend the sacred public offices in our dear union.
As a matter of fact, I am a matriculated student of Osun state university, department of Economics education 400l and I am a bona-fide indigene of osogbo, by all provisions, I am entitled to contest for any office under the platform of ONSU. I am aware, this is the simple criteria to run for elective office in the union and this should be applicable to all students in any tertiary institutions across the globe as well. But, what we witnessed on Tuesday (31/12/19) was a flagrant disobedient of the established laws of the union, misuse of power by the electoral body, and a compromise to impose a certain candidate on the entire members of the union.
It is believed that elections are key pillars of democracy which we practice in ONSU and have been the statutory means of legitimizing government right from time past.
Once due electioneering process are flawed, then it is an invitation to violence in ONSU which can snowball into political instability and can disregard our dear constitution as stated in Article VII, Section 1 and 2.
The reason why the Electoral Committee decided to go on with ASALA’s candidacy validation is not known to the general members of Osogbo National Students’ Union(ONSU) and we strongly believe the constitution supersedes everyone.
DEMANDS;
1. The election that produced Adetoro Afeez ASALA as President, Osogbo National Students’ Union (ONSU NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS) on Tuesday, 31/12/19 was built on clear illegality, hence all votes ascribed to the said candidate remains a nullity, therefore the election be set aside, and I am the candidate with the second highest lawful votes, I humbly demand to be declared the rightful winner of the election.
2. That the conspirators in this act of undermining our laws;- ISEC be brought to face the wrought of the law, so as to serve as deterrent to others who might be planning such in the future.
3. Justice must be done without bias, for the overall interest of Osogbo and our yet unborn generation.
Injustice to one they say is an Injustice to all.
Yours truly,
MURITALA Abdul lateef (Latman)
